Cheap Prescription Glasses. Why are Eureka Optical prices so low?
At Eureka Optical purchase our quality frames and lenses from the same sources as many of our competitors do, including both traditional retailers, as well as those sites online. However because we only sell to customers online, we can operate worldwide without retail shops. This means without retail overheads and high profit margins, we are able to offer you our quality eyeglasses at incredibly low mark ups.<br>We choose to cut our margins so low that you can afford to buy more than one pair should you decide: for you, your family, or friends. Even though our prices to you are low, you will find our quality is identical to competitors who sell frames and lenses at many times our price, often supplied by the same suppliers. Do you sell quality Prescription Sunglasses?
At Eureka Optical all our frames can be made up as prescription sunglasses. We can offer you quality prescription sunglasses from a range of colors and intensities including full 80% sunglass tints with seven colours to choose from, as well as sun reactive lenses that go clear indoors and darken outdoors. Additionally we offer Polarized, and Transition lenses. These options are available in both single vision, and progressive lenses.
Can I order glasses frames only ... without lenses?
We can supply your frames without lenses. As you place your order make sure (ignore when prompted for lens type) and request "fashion frames" on the comments panel on the way to the checkout, and of course leave prescription details blank.
How do I know my glasses frame measurements?
If you are already wearing glasses this is easy. As long as you are happy with the fit, you can usually read the measurements off the existing glasses. Mostly these measurements are found on the inside of the glasses frame arm, or occasionally on the nose bridge itself. These measurements are broken into three numbers e.g. 50-18-140. This tells us that the lens diameter (the diagonal measurement corner to corner) is 50mm, then the 18mm is the gap distance between the two lenses known as the nose bridge, and that the arm length is 140mm The arm length is the straight measurement from the corner that is level with the lens frame, to the of the end of the arm (includes the bent part that curves over the ear.) Does Glasses Frame Size Matter?
Perhaps the most important part of fitting your frame is the frame width, and you should compare the frame of your current glasses with the measurements shown on the website. You can determine the frame width by measuring the widest part of the frame on one side to the widest part on the other side, level with the arms on the frame at your temple.
The arm length is determined by measuring the straight measurement from the corner that is level with the lens frame, to the of the end of the curved arm (includes the bent part that curves over the ear.) The arm can generally be adjusted by bending to lengthen or shorten the amount curving over the ear.
Bridge width is not particularly a problem, because nose pads on all our metal frames are easily adjusted. If you choose plastic frames the bridge size becomes a factor to consider. Do you sell Bifocal and Progressive Lenses?
Yes we sell both bifocal and progressive lenses for the appropriate frames, which must measure at least 28mm in height for the lenses (depth) to allow for inclusion of the two prescriptions. Eureka Optical use the term "Multifocal Frames" to help you select (recognise) the correct frames for bifocal, or progressive use as you browse the site.
Multifocal (is the combined term for Bifocal, and Progressive lenses) combines two specific uses within the same lens i.e. distance and reading. The bifocal lens does this by having a clear definition between the two uses, by featuring an "invisible clear line" on the lens. Above the line is the distance prescription and below the line is the reading presciption. The progressive lens is basically a bifocal lens without a line, which progressively moves you from one prescription magnification to the other.
How do I order prescription glasses?
Ordering your glasses is easy...take these three simple steps:
Step 1...you will need to obtain a copy of your glasses prescription.
(See question below if you do not have it.)
Please note you cannot use a presciption prepared for contact lenses.
Step 2. Select your frame style (colour etc.)
Select from the menu on our home page the frames types that you prefer.
Step 3. Complete the details required:
- your name and correct postal delivery address details,
- your prescription details in full including PD (Pupillary Distance),
- your lens requirements (any options required such as tints, thinner lenses etc.) How do I obtain a prescription?
If you do not have one on hand you may request it from your optician, providing it is not more than two years old you may use that presciption to order your glasses from us. It is recommended that you have your eyes tested each two years. By law your optometrist is obliged to give you a copy of your prescription after your eye examination, but you will need to ask for it as they often forget.
Do not hesitate to request a copy of your prescription from your optician. You should not feel under any pressure that you should purchase your lenses and frames from the optician who tested your eyes. However do request that he includes the PD measurements, which many opticians leave off your prescription. PD is the measurement between your two eye pupils to ensure the correct fit.
- If necessary we can show you how to do this yourself.
See below: Can I measure my own PD?
- We also suggest you send a letter to contact your optician if you feel hesitant about going to see him. See below: Can you help me contact my optician?
We cannot directly contact your optician, however if you feel apprehensive about asking for what is yours i.e. your prescription details, then we suggest either you phone for a copy, or drop him a short note requesting a copy of "your prescription" enclosing a stamped self addressed envelope for him to return a copy to you.
Can you really afford to feel hesitant...do not overpay for your eyeglasses. Remember there is possibly a lot of your money at stake, and it's in your interest that you get good value for your money.
Can I use my contact lens prescription for my glasses?
No it is not possible to use a contact lens prescription for making your eyeglasses. Why is there no Sphere value on my prescription?
There may be no need for a sphere value. This simply means you may have an astigmatism (quite common) and that your eye is not a perfect sphere. If you do have a sphere value and it is preceded by a negative sign this means you are nearsighted. A positive sign preceding the value means you are farsighted. Why is there no Cyl value on my prescription?
Both the Cyl and Axis values are to correct astigmatism. No value under both Cyl and Axis indicates that you don't have an astigmatism to correct. Why is there no Axis value on my prescription?
If you have no Axis value then you will have no Cyl value too. However if you have a Cyl value on either eye you must have a corresponding Axis value. If this is incomplete in this way then please verify your prescription with your optician. What is "ADD", or "NV" (near vision) value on my prescription?
ADD, or NV is the reading part for a lens in a multi focal prescription. The positive "ADD", or "NV" value is the same for both eyes, which is why sometimes it is written only once on a prescription. In simple terms it indicates the additional strength of the overlay on the lens for reading. Why is there no PD value on my prescription?
If you are having your eyes tested, make sure you request the optician puts a PD value on your prescription. This is the distance measured between the pupils of your two eyes. It is frequently left off your copy of the prescription, but usually kept on file by the optician who would prefer you to order lenses and frames from them.
You have these three options:
- Ask your optician to put PD value on your prescription.
- You could accept the average PD value which is 63 for a man and 60 for a woman.
- Measure yourself accurately for better results..it is really easy!
Can I measure my own PD?
Yes you can. The PD is the distance in millimeters between your two pupils. We need this measurement so that the lenses we manufacture sit exactly over the center of your pupil for maximum effectiveness.
This measurement is simply taken from the center of your left eye pupil to the center of your right eye pupil in millimeters. Take a sheet of paper and make a pencil mark on it to line up with one pupil, and then (in front of a mirror, or with the help of another person) make another mark to line up with the other pupil. You can then measure the distance between the two marks with a metric ruler or tape measure. (As a guide only, a typical average measurement for a man is 63mm,and 60mm for a woman.)
Sometimes on prescriptions they show these measurements as two halves i.e. 30/30 (= 60),or as uneven halves. .If this happens, just combine the measurements to the nearest number!
In fact it is not so very critical if your measurement is out by a millimeter or two. However if you repeat this measurement several times, one after the other, you will eliminate the likelihood of any misreadings.
Try to be as accurate as you can, especially for progressive lenses. If you have your PD marked on an older prescription, you can use that PD measurement as it doesn't change. What style of glasses frames are best suited to me?
Broadly speaking our experience has shown us that the following rules work well:
Round Faces - Rectangular frames are most suitable.
Oval Faces - Many frames will suit this face shape. The most important thing to consider is size when deciding on frames.
Triangular Faces - Rectangular frames would generally be most suitable.
Square Faces - Oval Shaped or Round Frames are most suitable.
Rectangular Faces - Oval and Round frames are most suitable with medium or larger size models. What's included with each pair of eyeglasses that I order?
All prices quoted include a quality stylish frame and thin and light 1.50 index lenses, added to this we include free anti scratch coating and UV protection, and free lens edge polishing and beveling.

Do you sell tints and coatings for your lenses?
Yes we have a large range of tints in varying intensities across seven different colours, making a total of twenty-one selections. There are three levels of colour saturations within the seven colours offered . The tints offered are as follows:
- The 10% tint is a fashion accent softening the impact of a clear lens.
- The 50% tint has both an indoor and outdoor darkness evident.
- The third tint of 80% is effectively an outdoor sunglass tint.
We also have Photochromic sun reactive lenses that change colour as you move from indoors to outdoors. Additionally we sell Polarised, and the well known Transition lenses available in single vision and progressive lenses.
Added to these options, we include free scratch proof coatings and free UV protection on all our lenses.
We also can supply anti-reflective lens coating as an inexpensive option to reduce glare and reflections in night driving. Explain to me about the different lens index sizes?
Our lenses at Eureka Optical come in various thicknesses, usually described as index size.
Single vision:
Our standard lenses use an Index of 1.50 and are scratch proof and UV protected.
We also supply higher index lenses of 1.56, 1.58, 1.61, and 1.67, and 1.74. These higher index lenses are used for extremely strong prescriptions to minimize the apparent thickness, weight and clarity at the outer edges of the lens.
Multi focal:
Our multi focal progressive lenses use 1.50 index lens and are also available in the higher index thicknesses of 1.58,1.61,1.67 and 1.74. These higher index lens are more expensive and should be selected advisedly as they may not necessarily achieve the effect the customer is seeking. It is worth considering Free Form Progressive Lenses, a relatively recent development, that gives progressive lens wearers an increase of up to 50% more in their field of vision. This simply means you do not experience the same problems of distortion on the outer edges of your progressive lenses.
General:
There are many factors that influence the selection of higher index lenses, including whether you are near-sighted, far-sighted, the width of the lens and the strength of the correction, or cosmetically just want thinner lenses. See our tabbed section "All About Lenses" at the top of the home page for more specific guidance.

All our eyeglasses are tested, checked against your prescription details supplied, and inspected prior to packing and despatching. Internally we issue our own certification of compliance to your prescription supplied, which we retain in our records after making up your glasses. How does your guarantee work?
Our guarantee is for 7 days from the date of delivery to you, and covers replacement in the unlikely case of a breakage occurring during delivery, but it does not include breakages due to lack of care on your behalf. It also includes cover for any defects that may have not been detected during our final inspection process prior to dispatching.
